FlyUX
This is a project I worked on while taking the UX Design course at the UX Design Institute.
The project objective was to design an airline app by going through the full UX process - from research to prototype.
Competitive benchmark
f
The task was to review four travel websites or four travel mobile apps and benchmark them to see what they are doing well. Then use the outcome when designing my own airline website or app at the end of the course.
I chose to review apps because I want to design a mobile app at the end of the course.
Objectives:
Online survey
The task was to create an online survey and send it to friends and colleagues to learn more about the goals of airline customers.
The aim was to get a minimum of 15 survey responses to be able to make more informed design decisions later in the case study, and give some practice analysing survey data.
Objectives:
- Learn more about the goals of people that use airline websites and apps - what are they trying to do, what (if anything) is preventing them from doing it, what else would they like to be able to do on airline websites and apps
- Learn how to create an online survey
Note-taking
The task was to take notes of two recorded user tests for airline mobile apps, to highlight the key insights observed. The recordings consist of an introduction, an interview and the usability test.
The notes should be detailed on everything relevant to describing the current user experience: goals, behaviours, pain points, mental models and contextual information. The notes should be concise, detailed and memorable. The document should be easy to read, scannable and consider using hierarchy to highlight the key points.
Objectives:
- Learn the value of conducting usability tests in your research
- Build your skills in this extremely important research technique
- Create a bank of insights that will be used during the next project, and all subsequent projects
Usability test
The task was to conduct one usability test with one user. It was recommended to also conduct an interview as part of the session.
For the usability test it was recommended to do a comparative test where the user completed tasks on two different airline mobile apps.
Objectives:
Full recording can be shared upon request
Affinity diagram
The task of this project was to review all research conducted in previous projects. Make notes during this review, and then use these notes to create an affinity chart that represents the analysis of the data collected so far.
It was recommended to get at least one other person to help with the task.
Objectives:
- Create an affinity diagram
- Learn how to put structure on qualitative research data
- Learn the power of collaborative analysis
Customer journey map
The task was to structure the analysis from the affinity diagram project even more and build on it by creating a customer journey map.
Objectives:
- Create one customer journey map
- Learn how to translate research data into a structured document
Flow diagram
The task in this project was to define a high-level flow for the mobile app for the new airline. The focus would be on a flow for this exercise, that is, a primary use case.
Objectives:
- Define the high-level flow to book flights in the new mobile app for the airline
- Deal with all the issues highlighted in your customer travel map
- Prepare to design screen details
Interaction design
The task in this project was to sketch the screens for the airline flight booking process for mobile.
Objectives:
- Sketch the screens and screen states for users flowing through the flight booking application for mobile. Start from the homepage of the app right through to the seat selection.
- Address all the issues and user goals identified in your research and analysis.
- Build on the flow diagram created in a previous project.
- Learn how to use sketching as a tool for problem solving.
- Learn how sketching is a vital step before prototyping or digital wireframing.
